Back to the Basics: The Toxic Mold Series

5 Part Series of Articles About Mold and Mycotoxins

This is the first article in series of articles where I was a guest writer for CitriSafe Healthy Living Blog. The series will follow the toxic mold journey as they enter the body and are metabolized.

1. The journey mold and mycotoxins take into and through the human body;
2. How the mold and toxins are removed from our bodies;
3. How mold impacts the brain and how the brain detoxes;
4. How environmental illness falls into physician blind spots;
5. Why the air in our homes is so important.

Mold In Carpet Will Impact Your Health

You Carpet is a Homes Largest Air Filter That Does Not Get Changed

By Cesar Collado

While many people enjoy the warmth and comfort of wall to wall carpeting, Vacuuming often is a significant commitment.  Carpet does not only capture crumbs, dirt and hair.  It captures small particulates that include VOCs, toxins, mold, bacteria, and other harmful compounds.  Furthermore, these particulates can settle at the base of the carpet where they cannot be seen or might not be accessible by a standard vacuuming.  The following article provides additional information on the challenge of keeping your home safe for family and pets on carpet.  A carpet can weigh up to 8 X its normal weight when it is removed.  That is significant accumulation of dust and dust components.  As important, carpets retain moisture for lengthy periods of time.

We recognize that children and pets spend a significant amount of time on carpet.  They touch the carpet and are capable of placing their hands to their faces and mouths.

The Laundry Room and Clothing Can Make You Sick

The Science of Washing Machines, Detergents and Removing Mold from Laundry

by Cesar Collado

It is common knowledge today that the laundry room can be a mold incubator.  It is exposed to significant moisture in the washer and dryer, inevitably leaving the room humid.  Front load washers can also harbor mold if they are not cleaned by hand or by using mold removing solutions.

When mold stays in clothing, it is carried with you throughout your day providing continuous exposure.  In addition, clothing can spread mold to anywhere you go.  It only takes a few spores in ideal conditions to generate significant mold colonization.

The following article was written to explain how washing machines work using the science of laundry soap and physics to remove dirt, mold, and bacteria.  Surfactants are the “soapy” or “bubbly” vehicles that encapsulate particulates and escort them out of the laundry into the rinse to wash them away from clothing.

My Recent Bout with Environmental Illness

By Cesar Collado

Late last summer, I was exposed to Legionella bacteria while attending a basketball camp for old people (35-70).  The athletic and trainer’s facilities where we played and recovered were likely as up-to-date and clean as they come in the world.  Unfortunately, no facility is immune from ubiquitous and opportunistic microbial pathogens that simply follow the water.  The following article was published late last year.  It documents my experience with Legionnaires disease.  While uncommon, outbreaks like the one I was exposed have occurred all over the country.

Legionnaires  symptoms are very similar to those resulting from mold, mycotoxins, and bacteria.  While they lasted for a couple weeks, I clearly understand the enormity of environmental illness debilitation.  I sincerely empathize with those who suffer these symptoms indefinitely.
