It is common knowledge today that the laundry room can be a mold incubator.  It is exposed to significant moisture in the washer and dryer, inevitably leaving the room humid.  Front load washers can also harbor mold if they are not cleaned by hand or by using mold removing solutions.

When mold stays in clothing, it is carried with you throughout your day providing continuous exposure.  In addition, clothing can spread mold to anywhere you go.  It only takes a few spores in ideal conditions to generate significant mold colonization.

The following article was written to explain how washing machines work using the science of laundry soap and physics to remove dirt, mold, and bacteria.  Surfactants are the “soapy” or “bubbly” vehicles that encapsulate particulates and escort them out of the laundry into the rinse to wash them away from clothing.
